In this blog, I, Harmi, describe our own experience.

It’s been quite a few years since we, a year after my brain surgery, first went camping for a few days. A few days together. I looked forward to it, I dreamed about it, we were both looking forward to it, and eventually, the day came when we would go. A few hours of driving, somewhere in the Belgian Ardennes, a small campsite by a babbling river. Upon arrival, it overwhelmed me so intensely that I didn’t know how to handle it. So much needed to be done—setting up the tent, unpacking, exploring, the daily things, and new things. I fell silent; I didn’t know what to do.  

Fortunately, my husband and the kids knew what to do. They could enjoy themselves. And very slowly, that overwhelming feeling began to lift from me. Knowing that I didn’t have to do anything, that it was okay, and that I could simply be there. Enjoying together.

It touched me, that moment of disarray, of standing still, there at that little campsite. It also taught me that it’s important to confront what I cannot do. Not to avoid it, but to make good preparations.

Preparations that are necessary when life is no longer so self-evident. We may face it and reach out to someone who thinks along with us, observes with us. Sometimes we need someone to dot the i's and cross the t's for us, because there is so much to think about. Your dreams are also worth truly enjoying. You are allowed to just be.
